The Relationship between Negative Symptoms and performance on Wisconsin Card Sort Test in Chronic Schizophrenia

Abstract
There is growing interest in the symptoms of schizophrenia known as negative or deficit symptoms. The simiiarity between frontal lobe syndrome and negative symptoms has been offered as evidence that negative symptoms are related to frontal lobe
impaiment. To ivestigate the relationship between negative symtptoms and the performance on a frontal lobe taks. forty unmedicated chronic schizophrenics were adminiatered the Wisconsin Card Sort Test (WCST). which is devised to investigate tasks
associated with frontal lobe functions. as well as the negative symptoms using SANP and positive symptoms using SAPS. The negative symptoms such as affective flattening. avolition-apathy. and anhedonia-asociality factors of SANP were negatively
correlated with the performance on the WCST. These findings suggest that chronic impaiment in schizophrenia is related specifically to a frontal lobe deficit.
